Meeting the UK government’s net zero emissions goal for 2050 will only be possible by complete decarbonisation of the building stock (both existing and new). There is uncertainty over the extent to which heating might practically be decarbonised in the future and what the optimal technologies may be. This paper provides some clarity about the pathways forward, focusing on the next 5-10 years.
The first UK-wide citizens’ assembly on climate change published its final report in September, setting out a clear, internally consistent and timely path for how the UK can reach its legally binding target of net zero emissions by 2050.
PwC have published a joint report with Energy UK – ‘Rebuilding the UK economy: fairer, cleaner, more resilient’ which provides the UK government with a toolkit of policy interventions to help identify the actions that will have maximum impact in creating jobs and growth across the UK.PwC has also partnered with Cornwall Insight to better understand and explain the rapidly evolving market for fleet electrification.
Ofgem has unveiled proposals for a five-year investment programme of around £25 bn to transform Britain’s energy networks to deliver emissions-free green energy for GB along with world-class service and reliability. Investment in the networks that transport energy round GB is likely to rise, to ensure they can deliver clean energy and meet Government targets for a net zero emissions GB. This investment will also help generate green growth and employment.
Ministers must seize the opportunity to turn the COVID-19 crisis into a defining moment in the fight against climate change, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) says. In its annual report to Parliament, published in June, the Committee provides comprehensive new advice to the Government on delivering an economic recovery that accelerates the transition to a cleaner, net-zero emissions economy and strengthens the country’s resilience to the impacts of climate change.
We will be running our energy seminar series and other meetings as webinars for the remainder of 2020. Podcasts of the first two webinars ‘What is Climate Finance?’ with presentations from Dr Amal Lee Amin and Kirsty Hamilton and ‘The Future of Renewable Energy – Challenge & Opportunities’ with Paddy Padmanathan, President & CEO of ACWA Power, can be viewed on the videos page and in the meetings archive. More webinars are planned for the autumn so stay tuned.
New research by Energy Systems Catapult has found that while 75% of people believe climate change is a serious threat, they are still unclear as to which activities in their lives emit carbon – with only 49% realising natural gas heating contributes to carbon emissions.
This paper from the National Infrastructure Commission sets out updated evidence and analysis of the electricity system in the context of the 2050 net zero greenhouse gas emissions target. It concludes that the evidence continues to support the recommendations that the Commission made on the power sector in the National Infrastructure Assessment.
A new report by Energy Systems Catapult has found Net Zero by 2050 is possible if the UK supports innovation and scale-up across three essential areas – Low Carbon Technology, Land Use and Lifestyle.
