New UKERC briefing on Net Zero Heating

Meeting the UK government’s net zero emissions goal for 2050 will only be possible by complete decarbonisation of the building stock (both existing and new). There is uncertainty over the extent to which heating might practically be decarbonised in the future and what the optimal technologies may be. This paper provides some clarity about the pathways forward, focusing on the next 5-10 years.

PWC publishes two reports : Green Recovery and Fleet Electrification

PwC have published a joint report with Energy UK – ‘Rebuilding the UK economy: fairer, cleaner, more resilient’ which provides the UK government with a toolkit of policy interventions to help identify the actions that will have maximum impact in creating jobs and growth across the UK.PwC has also partnered with Cornwall Insight to better understand and explain the rapidly evolving market for fleet electrification.

OFGEM announces energy networks investment programme

Ofgem has unveiled proposals for a five-year investment programme of around £25 bn to transform Britain’s energy networks to deliver emissions-free green energy for GB along with world-class service and reliability. Investment in the networks that transport energy round GB is likely to rise, to ensure they can deliver clean energy and meet Government targets for a net zero emissions GB. This investment will also help generate green growth and employment.

CCC : Reducing UK emissions Progress Report

Ministers must seize the opportunity to turn the COVID-19 crisis into a defining moment in the fight against climate change, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) says. In its annual report to Parliament, published in June, the Committee provides comprehensive new advice to the Government on delivering an economic recovery that accelerates the transition to a cleaner, net-zero emissions economy and strengthens the country’s resilience to the impacts of climate change.

ESC Report: Understanding Net Zero: a consumer perspective

New research by Energy Systems Catapult has found that while 75% of people believe climate change is a serious threat, they are still unclear as to which activities in their lives emit carbon – with only 49% realising natural gas heating contributes to carbon emissions.

NIC Report: Net Zero Opportunities for the Power Sector

This paper from the National Infrastructure Commission sets out updated evidence and analysis of the electricity system in the context of the 2050 net zero greenhouse gas emissions target. It concludes that the evidence continues to support the recommendations that the Commission made on the power sector in the National Infrastructure Assessment.
