The BIEE’s third ” Future of Energy” lecture will be given by Iain Conn, CEO Centrica, on May 4th 2016 at the Royal Society in London.
In his speech, Iain will talk about the rapidly changing energy landscape ‘a transformational moment for the energy industry, which bears comparison to the revolution we have seen in the communications sector over the past 20 years’. He will focus on the consumer-driven trends that are transforming the energy market, arguing that it is customers who are the real enablers of change, and their behaviour is fundamental to where and how energy will be used. Iain will consider the role that technology and big data will play in enabling those changes, the role natural gas will play in the future energy mix and will explore policy pathways to achieve energy and climate change objectives more effectively.
Iain was appointed Chief Executive of Centrica plc on 1 January 2015. He is Chairman of the Executive Committee and the Disclosure Committee.
He has a wealth of experience heading a global consumer brand. He possesses a deep understanding of the energy sector built up over a lifetime in the industry with a commitment to customers and safety. Iain was previously Chief Executive, Downstream, of BP’s refining and marketing division, a position he held for seven years. Iain was a Board member of BP for 10 years from 2004 and has previously held a number of senior roles throughout BP including in trading, exploration and production, and the management of corporate functions such as safety and human resources. He also served as a non-executive director and senior independent director of Rolls-Royce Holdings plc from January 2005 until May 2014.
Iain is a non-executive director of BT Group plc, Chairman of the Advisory Board of Imperial College Business School, a member of the Council of Imperial College, a member of the advisory board of the Centre for European Reform, a member of the European Round Table of Industrialists and a member of the CBI’s President’s Committee.
